The Joy of Discography
OK, this is it. Now, with the court decision (no, I will not go into the recent lawsuit), I don't know how available any of this is anymore. Well, I got mine, buddy....

Fresh Fruit for Rotting
Vegetables (1980)
Originally released by
Cherry Red Records (U.K.) and I.R.S. (which also brought us R.E.M. and the Go-Go's),
later re-released on the band's own Alternative Tentacles label as catalogue
number 1 (aka Virus 1).
In God We Trust, Inc. (1981)
An ep, it is now included at the end of the Plastic Surgery Disasters
cd, as well as on vinyl. Cover is Winston
Smith's Christ crucified on a cross of money. The record is mainly a shot
at the religious right/televangelists.
Plastic Surgery Disasters
(1982)
Their second full length
record. Their best, in my opinion. Has a neat intro and ending for
the whole record--a woman speaking like a receptionist in a shrink's office.
Frankenchrist (1985)
This was the album that got
Jello Biafra arrested for "distribution of harmful matter to
minors." Dispute was ostensibly about the inclusion of H. R. Giger's
"Landscape XX," but then it turned to the band's lyrics, which
were/are often critical of American politics, jock mentality, MTV, racism, the
whole bag.
Bedtime for Democracy (1987)
The
last studio album, it was released after the band had broken up. Rather a
mixed bag, but standouts include "Chickenshit Conformist" and
"Where Do You Draw the Line?" Get the vinyl version, so you can
see Winston Smith's cover in all its detail.
Give Me Convienience or Give
Me Death! (1989)
This is mainly a bunch of
B-sides, alternate takes, compilation contributions, and never-before released
songs. I dig it though.
Singles:
"California Uber Alles"/"Man
with the Dogs" 1979 Alternative Tentacles
"Holiday in Cambodia"/"Police Truck" 1980 IRS, Cherry Red
"Kill the Poor"/Insight" 1980 Cherry Red
"Too Drunk to Fuck"/"The
Prey" 1981 Alternative Tentacles, Cherry Red
"Nazi Punks Fuck Off"/"Moral Majority" 1981 Alternative Tentacles/Subterranean (comes with cool armband)
"Bleed for Me"/"Life Sentence" 1982 AT
"Halloween"/"Saturday Night Holocaust" 1982 AT
Videos
Live aka Live on Broadway aka Live at DPMO's: 1984. Can be found as a DVD import from England on Cherry Red Records.
Somewhere out there is also floating a video with D.O.A. It's not an official release, but it's pretty cool.
Books
Dead Kennedys: The Unauthorized Version. 1983, by Marian Kester and F-Stop Fitzgerald. Not great, but it's the only book out there. It stops way too early, and isn't particularly in-depth, mainly a bunch of articals strugn together.
Hard Rock Comics: Dead Kennedys. 1991. Well, back about ten years ago, there was a series called Rock n Roll comic books. I have this, Nirvana, and R.E.M. If anyone sees the Black Sabbath issues, let me know. It's OK--not well written, but good for the novelty of it.
